Connor, Witting to be inducted into Hall
Posted by trasher on August 16th, 2008 in General News, WAHA News

Mike Connor and Dave Witting have given countless hours of their lives to hockey, asking for nothing in return.

Now, the game will give something back to these gentlemen.

Next month, the two men will be inducted into the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame during a ceremony held in Eagle River on September 6.

Visit http://www.wihockeyhalloffame.com/ for more details and biographies.

Congratulations Mike and Dave!!

Reedsburg youth groups to help flood victims
Posted by trasher on July 29th, 2008 in General News

Over the years, the Reedsburg community has been an outstanding supporter of the Reedsburg Youth programs.  After the devastating floods hit the LaValle, North Freedom, Reedsburg and Rock Springs communities, Reedsburg Youth programs started planning on what they could do to help their families, friends and neighbors who have suffered through these trying times.

With this in mind, representatives of Reedsburg Little League/Babe Ruth (Chuck Carter), Reedsburg Youth Football (Russ Lankey), Reedsburg Hockey (Deb Rosholt) and Reedsburg Swim Team (Teri Senzig) have been meeting and planning a fundraiser for Sunday, August 10th.  While these organizations have been involved in the initial planning, they welcome any other groups that would like to be involved.  As has been noted, “This was a large tragedy which had an affect on many families and friends in our area.  We would like to show our support and thanks to these communities for the support they have shown our youth in the past.  Also, part of our commitment to our youth is to set an example of giving back to our communities.”

USM hockey players aid flood victims
Posted by trasher on July 29th, 2008 in General News

By Alice Read and Tom Geilfuss

On a day that would hardly be associated with ice-skating, members of the University School of Milwaukee ice hockey team gathered Friday to help victims of the recent flooding in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where parts of the city, located near the junction of the Crawfish and Rock Rivers, remain submerged.

In the warm, rainy weather, thirteen University School hockey players donned plastic garbage bags and work gloves at the Jefferson Victim Assistance Center for protection from the toxic flood waters, and then went to the home of Jane and Mike Moreland. Mr Moreland is disabled with a heart condition and arthritis. The Morelands’ property, which is next to a local park that now resembles a lake with a swing set like an island at its the center, was surrounded by over a thousand wet sand bags put in place by Jefferson County inmates and used to hold back the worst flooding Moreland has ever seen.

Chicago Showcase: Final thoughts

Some Advantage For Team Minnesota
So did you know Team Minnesota used the Chicago Blackhawks dressing room? I bet former Blackhawk and Team Minnesota coach Phil Housley had something to do with that.

The Hall Is Calling
Former NHL legend Bobby Hull was signing autographs Friday and Saturday at the Edge, but he was not the only HOF’er in the rink. In fact, Team Wisconsin defenseman Tim Smith is also in the US Hockey Hall Of Fame. Smith played in a CCM tournament and was on the winning team. “The trophy is on display at the Hall for 1 year with the names of the winning teams players on it,” said a smiling Smith. The rugged D-man from Superior wanted no part of Bobby Hull on the ice though.

Three Stars Wanted On The Diamond
Eau Claire Memorial was missing one-third of their starting lineup of their baseball team Friday as Brady Sand (3B), Jefferson Dahl (2B), and David Donnellan (P/CF) were participating in Chicago. The baseball team also has high hopes for their season as well. (BTW, EC Memorial’s baseball game Friday was rained out, but the boys had to be back by 5pm Sunday for practice. No rest for the champs, or the weary.)

Hartzog takes home Showcase MVP award
Posted by trasher on April 20th, 2008 in General News

Gavin Hartzog (center) posing with his MVP Award with his parents

Milwaukee Marquette senior Gavin Hartzog brought home more than just a championship plaque on Sunday.

Maybe a few memories of a great week of hockey with his Team Wisconsin teammates, but maybe one more unexpected one– Hartzog was voted Most Valuable Player of the Chicago Showcase.
“I was pretty surprised to get it, but a lot of the credit goes to my teammates,” said Hartzog.
Hartzog scored seven goals and one assist in six games, including a big goal early in the third period to give Wisconsin a 4-2 lead. “That goal was huge,” said Coach Eric Fenton.
During the tournament Hartzog skated mostly on a line with Jefferson Dahl (EC Memorial) and Casey Kirley (Hayward). Hartzog logged a lot of ice time also because he took only one penalty in the tournament.
While putting on a great show in Chicago, Hartzog has no immediate offers from any team at this point.
Hopefully that will change. Congratulations Gavin, from Wisconsin Prep Hockey
Team Wisconsin-Chicago Showcase Coach’s Notes

Well, due to lack of internet access at the hotel where we were staying, the blogs for Friday and Saturday were unfortunately not a possibility so I will shortly sum up those two days and then get to the Championship game on Sunday.

(Day 3) Riding high from two substantial victories, we faced Michigan, who had time to watch and prepare a plan of attack for us(TW). They used a trap in the neutral zone to slow down our transitions and came with heavy pressure deep in our defensive zone. We tied the game at two goals each and this brought our record to 2-0-1 for the tournament and landed us safely in the 2nd seed for the second round of the tournament.

The Road to a Championship
Posted by charlie_strauss on April 20th, 2008 in Blogroll, General News, WAHA News

On Friday, we met up with Team Michigan for the first time.  After a day of activities similar to the previous days, we were ready to play for the first seed.  In this game we came out a little flat and really couldn’t bounce back from it.

Starting out down a goal, it was our first chance to deal with adversity and have to come back.  We ended up keeping the game tied at 2-2, playing our worst game, but still playing solid.  The tie was a good thing for us, as it showed that we were not invinceable and gave us a will to win to use in the games ahead.  The tie put us seeded second only behind Team Minneasota.
